All Things Bright and Beautiful

There is a hymn that we sing at church based on Genesis 1:31 that I absolutely love. I’m going to write the lyrics, and I want you to read them slowly, don’t just rush through it.

All Things Bright and Beautiful

All things bright and beautiful, all creatures great and small, all things wise and wonderful the Lord God made them all.

Each little flower that opens, each little bird that sings, He made their glowing colors, He made their tiny wings.

The purple headed mountain, the river running by the sunset and the morning that brightens up the sky.

The cold wind in the winter, the pleasant summer sun, the ripe fruits in the garden, He made them everyone.

He gave us eyes to see them, and lips that we might tell, “HOW GREAT IS GOD ALMIGHTY, WHO HAS MADE ALL THINGS WELL.

As I reflect on the words of the hymn, I think about how when a child is little, they are so amazed and mesmerized by everything. They want to pick the beautiful little flowers, they want to stop and look at everything as you’re walking, and they are so sweet when they touch your mouth while you’re talking. They touch, investigate, and gaze intently with wonderment at everything. Unfortunately, some of us like me, who are task oriented and so busy trying to get everything done that we don’t encourage that beautiful nature that our Father put within them. We instead spend our time rushing them right past the beauty of our Fathers creation.

As a parent with grown children, I regret not slowing down and taking the time to enjoy and teach them in those peaceful and precious moments about our Awesome Creator who created them and all the beautiful things around us.

If I had any advice to give a young couple raising children (no matter what age), I would say SLOW DOWN! When your child picks a flower, take the time to sit and gaze at the beauty with them, take that precious moment to share with them the love of our Wonderful Creator.

Proverbs 6:22 says “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he will not depart from it”. There are all kinds of teaching moments, but these are the most beautiful. I don’t know about you, but I personally would enjoy this form of teaching over being lectured. Who knows, if we actually slowed down and took advantage of these moments, there might not be as much need for lectures.

Till next time may our Lord and Savior keep you close!
